The Defender can be powered by three engines designated as follows: HD7, HD9 and HD10, calibrated to deliver low-end torque. The HD7 is a 700 cm/3 single-cylinder delivering 52 horsepower. The UFORCE is powered by a new 963 cm³ V-twin that delivers 79 horsepower and 60 lb-ft of torque. It’s a spirited engine that fires through the entire rev range. It’s powered by electronic fuel injection and paired with CFMOTO’s CVTech-IBC transmission.
4×4 mode, transmission and suspension:
The CVTech-IBC transmission offers high and low speed range, with excellent two- and four-wheel drive and electronic locking differential. This workhorse is equipped with four-wheel independent double-wishbone suspension with oil-filled shock absorbers. The shock absorbers can be adjusted to five different levels for a perfect fit with our driving style.
Interior and accessories:
It’s available in two versions: the XL is a 6-passenger or the regular three-passenger, either of which will be most comfortable on your travels. As usual, CFMOTO will deliver your UFORCE with lots of standard equipment, such as a 3500-lb. winch with remote control, rigid side door, aluminum wheels, and a practical two-inch front and rear hitch receiver. Not really surprising to find Yamaha among our top 5 utility vehicles. The Viking will get the job done without flinching, and will leave you wanting more for the next job you give it. Yamaha’s quality assembly will ensure a virtually indestructible utility vehicle.
Engines:
No matter which version of the Viking you choose, the engine remains the same: we’re talking about a 686 cm³ single-cylinder engine with wide-curve power. Electronic fuel injection and liquid cooling ensure constant engine performance. A four-valve head with 10.0:1 compression ensures optimum torque for optimal engine power in all circumstances.
Transmission, interior and suspension:
The Viking is equipped with the famous Ultramatic fully automatic CVT transmission with engine braking. The On-Command electrically selectable 4×4 system with full differential lock enables the Viking to cope with the worst conditions. Power steering provides a smooth ride with exemplary manoeuvrability worthy of Yamaha.
The interior remains modest but very comfortable, with easy access to controls and well-fitting bench seats. The middle passenger seat is set back five degrees to avoid shoulder and elbow contact.

Numbers 5: Kawasaki PRO-FXR 1000 HD Mule
Kawasaki has always been a major player in the industry, and is also present in the utility segment. Kawasaki’s Mule series is designed primarily for work, so if you’re looking for performance, forget it. The components are ultra-robust in their design, for the most solid quality in the business.
Engines:
This year, Kawasaki introduces a new 1000 cm³ engine. A parallel-twin with electronic fuel injection, it develops 69 horsepower and 61 lb-ft of torque.
Transmission, interior and suspension:
The engine’s power flows through a continuously variable transmission (CVT), coupled with an electrically selectable 2WD/4WD system and a bimodal locking rear differential. Power steering is standard on all Mule FX models. The three-passenger bench seat provides excellent comfort, yet the interior is spacious enough for the long working days for which it was designed.
Suspension is independent double-wishbone at the front, and exactly the same as independent double-wishbone at the rear.
