Introduction

Can-Am has just launched its third generation of large-displacement Outlander ATVs. The Can-Am Outlander 850 and 1000R 2025 feature a new engine. With this change, the manufacturer is once again positioning itself as an essential reference in this category. Can-Am isn’t just following the trend, it’s redefining standards of performance and versatility. It’s been in the company’s DNA since the beginning, and this new motorization is no exception.

Power and performance

The heart of the new Outlander 850 and 1000R is their twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled Rotax engine, with a common displacement of 999 cm3. Yes, you read that right… there’s just one displacement powering both versions (850 and 1000R). Exactly the same trick that Can-Am has been using since 2023 in the Outlander 500 and 700. Or like the 900 cm3 engine available in a number of versions (naturally-aspirated or turbocharged) for the Maverick X3.

This new engine delivers impressive power and torque. For the first time, the 1000R model boasts triple-digit power! An insane 101 hp and 69 lb*ft of torque are available. And for the Outlander 850, we’re really not outdone. It boasts 82 horsepower and 66 lb*ft of torque. These are big numbers when compared with the competition in the ATV segment.

The Outlander’s sturdy frame may seem to limit the new engine’s enthusiasm. In fact, it feels like a sport ATV in certain circumstances, as some of the photos show. By the way, you can read detailed reviews of each model here :

The engine of the Can-Am Outlander 850 and 1000R 2025 is designed to excel in all conditions. Whether on rough terrain, uphill, or under full load, the engine’s responsiveness is remarkable. It’s also important to understand that power increases linearly with engine speed. So it’s easy to dose all that cavalry, even if it is the biggest in the industry. As a bonus, you have the option of three driving modes (Work, Standard and Sport) thanks to the selector (iTC). In short, you benefit from lively acceleration and muscular acceleration, all under full control. We love the behavior and smoothness of this new Rotax engine.

What’s the difference between the 850 and the 1000R?

Now for the killer question… What’s the difference between the 850 and 1000R engines, if the displacement is the same? Well, it’s relatively simple. It’s only the computer (ECU) that’s different. It controls injection mapping, throttle opening and so on. So, potentially, you could buy an Outlander 850 and want to modify it into a 1000R by “flashing” the ECU or replacing it.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. After putting the question to the folks at Can-Am, they explained:

  • The cooling system on the 1000R is bigger. It is optimized to meet the cooling needs of this greater power. In other words, the 850 would overheat very quickly if infused with 101 horsepower.
  • What’s more, the clutch calibration is different between the two models. In short, it’s better to make the right choice from the outset than to try to increase the 850’s power. As an added bonus, if you opt for the 1000R, it comes with extra “premium” features, such as four disc brakes.

Another interesting aspect to consider… We can deduce that reliability will be superior on the 850. In fact, the engine’s displacement and numerous internal components are the same. It can be deduced that the 850 version enjoys improved reliability with oversized components. This is a notable advantage of the 850 over the 1000R. What’s more, the Can-Am Outlander 850 offers very impressive performance, as the preceding photo proves.

Noise reduction and side panels

Considerable efforts have been made to reduce unwanted mechanical noise. This enhances the engine sound and enriches the driving experience. The new side panels play another crucial role. They manage the heat directed towards the driver. Thanks to fresh-air openings in the front wheels, hot air from the engine is propelled towards the rear. The panels provide effective insulation for the engine compartment. This design, inspired by the Outlander 500/700, considerably enhances comfort.

What’s more, these panels are easy to remove for maintenance, allowing rapid access. This simplicity facilitates home repairs. It also saves dealers time, reducing service costs. Every detail has been well thought out.
