Introduction

Can-Am is renowned for being very active in off-roading, and this year is no exception. A few new features like the Maverick R Max, active suspension on the 64” Maverick… And above all, a whole new generation of Outlander ATVs. We recently had the chance to ride the Can-Am Outlander XT-P 1000R 2025 in British Columbia.

It’s important to mention that we’re not just talking about a “redesign” of the panels and a few modifications. Rather, we’re talking about a completely new platform with 95% new components! Let’s take a closer look at it to get a feel for what it’s like to ride it.

Look and style

At first glance, the Outlander’s similarity to the latest-generation Outlander 500/700 is immediately apparent, followed by distinctive, even more premium-looking features such as the light signature. As we tour the vehicle, we must mention the exemplary finish and attention to detail.

For the Can-Am Outlander XT-P 1000R 2025, the manufacturer had the brilliant idea of including more storage space as standard. There’s a front trunk, as on the Outlander 500/700. There’s also a trunk just in front of the driver’s seat for a cell phone with USB connection. As an added bonus, these large-displacement models also come with a removable rear trunk that looks like a toolbox. A bit like a Defender side-by-side. What a great feature!

To give the rider all the information he needs, a 7.6” digital display is prominently displayed at the front. It’s a safe bet that an optional 10.25” touchscreen will be available in the future. For the time being, however, only the Outlander MAX 1000R Limited model has it.

And, as Can-Am has long accustomed us to with these vehicles, there’s a long list of accessories already available. That’s no less than 90 accessories to adapt the vehicle to your needs… and your wallet.

All-new powertrain

For this new generation, we’re also treated to an all-new powertrain. A 999 cm3 Rotax V-twin engine. Interestingly, the displacement is exactly the same for the 850 and 1000R models. Of course, the power ratings are not the same. In any case, Can-Am’s excessiveness is noteworthy. For the first time, Can-Am is offering an ATV with triple-digit horsepower. The 1000R models boast 101 horsepower. We’re also talking about a very generous 69 lb*ft of torque.

All in all, these are figures that announce impressive power. Allowing lively acceleration that will impress even the most experienced drivers. When you set off, you can choose one of three driving modes to adjust the responsiveness of the throttle. No matter what the situation: climbing steep slopes, traversing rough terrain, sprinting through sand… the Outlander 1000R never lacks for power.

It’s also equipped with intelligent engine braking (iEB), which can be set in three positions to help you control steep descents. In fact, when set to maximum, the brake can be virtually dispensed with in certain circumstances.

Side panels and noise reduction

A great deal of effort has been devoted to reducing unwanted noise caused by mechanical components. The main aim is to enhance the presence of the engine’s sound. It also titillates the senses and offers a smoother ride.

In addition to reducing noise, the side panels also serve to reduce the heat emitted towards the driver. With fresh air directed into the fenders of the front wheels, heat is pushed to the rear. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll never want to go back to the old version just for this aspect.

The final key feature of these side panels is undoubtedly their ease of maintenance. They only take a few seconds to remove and provide ideal access for maintenance. What’s more, the top section can be removed in seconds to provide access to the fuses and air filter. So you can do the maintenance yourself, and very quickly. Otherwise, even at the dealership, you’ll save several minutes ($) on maintenance thanks to this increased speed.

Visco-4Lok front differential and four-wheel brakes

1000R models feature the Visco-4Lok locking front differential system, which delivers optimized performance. This ensures maximum traction on all types of slippery terrain.

Another interesting feature is that the 1000R models are equipped with a four-disc brake system. The only exception is the 850 XMR, which benefits from four disc brakes. Needless to say, braking power is just as impressive as the rest of the vehicle. In short, you feel safe approaching bends or in an emergency.

Suspensions

The new generation also features all-new front and rear suspension geometry. Suspension travel is 10.8“ at the front and 12” at the rear. All this with a ground clearance of almost 12”. That’s huge for a stock ATV, and you can feel it when you ride it. We also note the presence of FOX 1.5 Podium QS3 shocks. They adjust very easily with the three-position clicker (Soft, Medium, Firm).

A really important element to note is the transformation of the rear suspension geometry. This changes from atrailing arm to double wishbones. This completely changes the vehicle’s dynamics when cornering. In fact, the rear of the vehicle feels much flatter. The result is greater stability, even easier sliding and cornering speeds you’d hardly think possible.

Driving impressions

When it comes to taking a seat, we can confirm that comfort is the order of the day, with a roomy, well-padded seat. Ergonomics are good, with a natural posture. The handlebars are suitable for rhythmic riding, given their height and angle. You feel at ease and can ride for hours without discomfort. Handles and controls are within easy reach, with an intuitive layout that makes all functions easy to use.

From the very first kilometers, the sturdiness of the chassis impresses us, as it picks up 101 horsepower with ease. Power is unquestionably on tap, and surprisingly smoothly so. You can feel that all the cavalry is present, while gradually building up to its maximum at the end of the rev range. This favors traction and the ATV’s feeling of control. Acceleration is breathtaking, as is recovery. No matter what the situation, you can feel the vehicle always wanting more. The front end can be lifted quite easily, as shown in the photos… And we love it! Despite its utility ATV base, the Can-Am Outlander XT-P 1000R 2025 is very playful and sporty.

Balanced, solid handling

During our tests, we put the vehicle through its paces on a wide variety of surfaces. I noticed how effectively the shock absorbers absorb shocks, and how optimally calibrated they are. Whether on rocky roads or muddy tracks, driving comfort is a real strength of the new Outlander. This not only reduces fatigue during long outings, but also improves vehicle control.

Handling is another strong point. Thanks to its rigid chassis and balanced weight distribution. You can feel that the Outlander 1000R offers hyper-precise steering with impeccable ground feel. Tight bends are easy to negotiate, even at high speeds. The photos bear witness to this. In fact, I was particularly impressed by its stability during fast maneuvers. The three-position adjustable power steering system (DPS) also adds a dimension of comfort by reducing the effort required. At the same time, it gives you a real edge when it comes to maintaining control.

Versatility for every situation

As the miles roll by, it’s important to remember one thing: this is first and foremost a utility vehicle, not a 100% sports car like the Renegade. It’s important to remember that the Outlander does have an aspect of versatility. The Outlander’s stout build and weight (1000 lbs) don’t really hinder aggressive driving. On the other hand, they are excellent assets for hard work. The 1830 lb (830 kg) towing capacity is also worth mentioning. Whether you need to tow a load or bring in equipment for an expedition, it’s designed to get the job done. The front and rear racks offer impressive load capacity, as does the integrated storage. And let’s not forget the list of over 90 accessories available. So you can tailor it to suit your needs.

To conclude my driving impressions, I must confess… I didn’t even think I was in the presence of a utility vehicle any more. I felt more like I was in the presence of a real racing car, such is its high level of performance. I can’t wait for the XT-P 1000R version!

Highlights

  • Insane engine delivering 101 hp with disconcerting smoothness and linear power. Bonus: a sound that stirs the passions.
  • The double-wishbone rear suspension offers superior comfort and handling.
  • The XT-P version makes you feel like you’re on a competition ATV at every turn.

Points for improvement

  • A retail price that only goes up with all these performance features. The XT-P model now tops the $20,000 mark!
  • We would have liked to have been able to order the 10.25” screen as an option. For the moment, it’s exclusive to the Limited version. Perhaps by 2026 it will be available for the whole range?

Conclusion

The Can-Am Outlander XT-P 1000R 2025 is shaping up to be a front-runner in the large-displacement ATV segment. Its insane power, high-performance suspension and top-of-the-line finish take the experience up a notch. If you’re looking for a do-it-all ATV, look no further. The Outlander 1000R is a model to be seriously considered, with“fun factor” at its peak.
