Can-Am introduced the Maverick X3 model in August 2016. Since then, the name has been synonymous with power and refinement in the field of sporty side-by-side vehicles. The test was carried out during various rides in the Bas-Saint-Laurent and Chaudière-Appalaches regions, totaling over 1,200 kilometers. The model tested was the Can-Am Maverick X3 DS Turbo RR, the entry-level model in the Turbo RR series.
Engine
On the performance front, the rider’s adrenalin rises as quickly as the engine revs. The three-cylinder 900 cm³ ACE turbo engine delivers a total of 200 hp. When it comes to turbocharging, we often wonder about the “lag” it can cause; here, it’s simply minimal, if not non-existent. Can-Am has orchestrated the engine’s needs very well. An intercooler is used to cool the turbocharged air.
This ACE (Advanced Combustion Efficiency) engine is something of a Swiss Army knife. Bombardier uses it in many of its vehicles. It can be found on water, snow, road and trail. It can deliver 90 hp in the N/A “naturally aspirated” version, as well as 115 hp and more if fitted with a turbo, and 200 hp in the Turbo RR version with intercooler. Despite this wide range of power possibilities, this 900 ACE engine proves to be very robust.
Transmission
The transmission of the Maverick X3 DS Turbo RR is continuously variable. Can-Am has given it a handsome package that includes the p-Drive primary clutch combined with its QRS-X “Quick Response System” quick-acting clutch. Bombardier’s QRS-X system is a high-performance clutch designed to deliver responsiveness, durability and performance, enhancing the rider’s driving experience. The system provides a smooth ride while reacting very vigorously to the deployment of engine power.
The Maverick’s 4X4 and 4X4 “Smart-Lok” system is activated electrically at the touch of a button on the dashboard. Can-Am has added a second toggle button on the dashboard, allowing you to choose between the “Trail” and “Trail Activ” options. The first option, “Trail”, corresponds to the normal Can-Am 4X4. The next option, “Trail Active”, is simply impressive. It balances power distribution between the front and rear wheels, so that the front wheels pull more, improving cornering under hard acceleration. And I can confirm the effectiveness of this system. Rather than skidding around corners, the vehicle turns and accelerates as if hooked to rails.
Chassis and suspension
The large-diameter tubing that makes up the Maverick X3’s chassis provides excellent frame rigidity and much-appreciated protection. The tires on which this SxS is mounted are Maxxis 30“ Carnivore, mounted on 14” aluminum rims. These tires, which I didn’t spare in the slightest, easily resist punctures, and offer impeccable traction on the trail. The SxS is 132 inches long by 64 inches wide, with a dry weight of 1,546 lbs. With these specifications, Can-Am has kept the vehicle under the limits for use on Quebec’s federated trail network. The FQCQ requires a maximum weight of 2,094 pounds and a maximum width of 66 inches. A minimum 14-foot trailer is required to transport such a vehicle.
Suspension
Can-Am has equipped the Maverick with SHOWA “Piggyback” shock absorbers, which meet high expectations. At the front, the double wishbone suspension provides 20 inches of travel, while at the rear, the TTX-type four-link suspension also offers 20 inches of travel.
The springs, two per shock absorber, offer a range of adjustments for greater comfort with the short spring, while ensuring excellent damping with the second spring in more demanding conditions. What’s more, SHOWA shock absorbers feature adjustment options to optimize comfort and roadholding, adapting to individual riding styles.
Ergonomics
At first glance, the assertive lines of this model are an unmistakable reminder of its sporty character. The dashboard features a 4.5-inch screen, presenting all the necessary information in a clear and easy-to-read manner while driving. The seats, made of non-slip material, offer a slightly rearward-leaning driving position. These features help to provide the rider with a sporty, stable posture, despite the use of a simple three-point seatbelt. However, a four-point seatbelt is available as an option.
Access to the seats requires a modicum of flexibility, but once inside, they slide from front to rear, allowing both rider and passenger to easily find a comfortable position.
Comfortably seated in the driver’s seat, it becomes obvious that the Maverick X3’s rear visibility is almost non-existent, except for what is reflected in the central rear-view mirror.
The half-doors offer adequate splash protection, but the lower door opening can let some mud splash through.
Storage, what storage
This vehicle was not designed to be a great explorer, which explains the limited storage options. A glove compartment integrated into the dashboard protects personal belongings. Between the two seats, there are two handy cup holders and an open-pocket tray located towards the front of the center console.
At the rear, the cargo box consists simply of a tray with holes for lashing. Its size is restricted by the engine air intake, which is positioned behind the rider’s head. Space is also taken up by the engine intercooler. So, although a minimum of equipment can be placed there, it will quickly obstruct the rear view in the center mirror.
Driving impression
For the first few kilometers of driving, you get the impression that the Maverick X3 wants to dominate and intimidate you with its power and sporty stance. Once the beast has been tamed, every acceleration and every bounce the trail offers, bewitch the rider with its behavior.
Handling and comfort
Trail handling is remarkable. Steering precision is beyond reproach. A choice of three levels of steering assistance options offers the rider tailored comfort.
The suspension, after a few adjustments according to preference, allows you to make vertiginous passages without even realizing it. Despite the suspension’s impressive 20 inches of travel, anti-roll bars maintain the vehicle’s attitude and stability.
Powertrain
This engine is undoubtedly an explosion of power that will get your heart racing. However, after a moment’s adjustment, harmony is established between driver and vehicle. Its power curve makes it possible to control skids throughout corners without feeling limited. The CVT transmission efficiently manages power and acceleration with anticipation.
Accessories available
Can-Am has worked hard to offer an incredible range of accessories. From upgrades to customization to practical equipment, there’s an abundance to choose from.
What we liked:
- Plenty of power
- Suspension
- Trail handling
What we disliked:
- Noisy engine air intake behind rider’s head
- Lack of clearance at rider’s left knee
- No external door handle (opening actuated by rudimentary straps inside).
Overall
The Maverick X3 DS turbo RR stands out as an exceptional vehicle in the world of performance off-roaders. With its impressive power, cutting-edge mechanics and bold, timeless design, it combines performance with comfort. It has the ability to satisfy the most demanding riders, while offering a pleasant driving experience.
As a result, it exudes an aura of elegance and strength. It’s the perfect element to awaken the rally driver in you.
In closing, we’d like to thank Can-Am Off Road for making this test possible.
