Last year, CFMOTO introduced its new-generation ZFORCE. Bonus: a four-seat version for family and friends. The CFMOTO ZFORCE 950 SPORT-4 2024 boasts a revitalized look and performance that’s more than up to the task. Then, as the manufacturer has accustomed us in the past… There’s always so much standard equipment that makes it a very interesting option in this segment. Let’s take a closer look at this vehicle.

Eye-catching styling

Looking at the CFMOTO ZFORCE 950 SPORT-4 2024, we can say that it offers a more dynamic, but still relatively classic look. Still, it’s well done for their very popular ZFORCE side-by-side range. The front end features a nose that stands out from the competition. There’s also an attractive LED light signature and a prominent grille protected by the design-integrated bumper.

At the rear, on the other hand, you can clearly make out the design of another competitor (Can-Am with its Maverick Sport). It’s a pity that CFMOTO didn’t go for its own styling line, as it did for the front. Or go for something very drastic, like its much-heralded ZFORCE 950 HO model. We’ll have to wait for a future version of CFMOTO’s more innovative design. 

Standard equipment and finish quality:

The quality of finish is always on the rise for the Chinese manufacturer, and attention to detail is increasingly present. There are far fewer cheap plastics and the textures are excellent. Above all, there’s much less creaking inside the vehicle than in previous versions. Interior space is also more generous with this new version.

One of the highlights of the CFMOTO ZFORCE 950 SPORT-4 2024 is certainly the equipment that comes as standard. You’ll find side mirrors, turn indicators, a horn… A 4500 lb winch, a full roof, doors and, above all, a really practical dumpster lid to keep your luggage dry. Hats off to the manufacturer for including it standard for 2024 and not as an accessory (2023).

Powertrain:

To bring the ZFORCE 950 to life, we can count on a 963 cc V-twin engine that develops 85 HP and 60 lb*ft of torque. Of course, there’s electronic fuel injection and two driving modes. (Sport and Normal). Both modes allow you to play with throttle response to suit different types of terrain. In Sport mode, the full power of the cavalry is instantly available.

To transmit power efficiently, you can rely on a CV-Tech IBC transmission. The reliability of this manufacturer is unquestionable, allowing you to exploit the full potential of the engine. And, of course, there’s a selector for driveability (2×4, 4-wheel drive and 4×4 with locked front differential).

Suspension and wheels:

With the redesign of this model, we also get brand-new gas-charged shock absorbers with external reservoirs (piggyback). They are adjustable for spring preload and compression in seven positions by means of a ratchet. 

At the front, we have double wishbone geometry with 12 inches of travel. The rear features independent swing-arm suspension with a generous 13” of travel. Together, suspension and chassis provide 12” of ground clearance to overcome obstacles. 

Standard equipment also includes 14“ aluminum wheels with 27” O.D. STAG tires. The result is excellent bite, a quiet ride and proven durability.

Driving impressions:

First of all, as you take your place in the cabin, the driving position is comfortable and just sporty enough. The seats provide good lumbar support, keeping you firmly in place. The steering wheel and various controls are all well positioned for a successful presentation. There’s even a bright blue LED line running across the dashboard. A nice touch and attention to detail.

On start-up, you immediately hear the engine roar, suggesting that performance is on the cards. The stainless-steel central exhaust emits a sound that invites you to push the gas pedal. Although the CFMOTO ZFORCE 950 SPORT-4 2024 isn’t a monster of power, its engine delivers 85 HP very efficiently. Acceleration and throttle response feel a little more like 100-120 hp. However, you can still feel the vehicle’s 1750 lb of weight in this large version. As you drive it, you quickly realize that the chassis and especially the suspension could take a lot more. In short, we’d like to see a 120 hp version, or even better, turbocharged!

Trail curves are easy to follow, thanks to precise power steeringFeedback to the steering wheel is excellent, and the vehicle is predictable in all situations. Braking is also worthy of mention. It is robust enough to provide effective stopping power. Brake pedal feel is also well modulated and easily proportioned. (It feels much better than previous versions). 

Vision is good, and comfort for all occupants is high. It should be noted, however, that rearward vision is practically non-existent with the trunk, and you’ll have to rely solely on the side mirrors.

All in all, driving impressions are impressive. A few years ago, CFMOTO was in a class of its own when it came to driving pleasure and many other aspects. Now, however, it’s safe to say that the Chinese manufacturer is playing in the big league. The CFMOTO ZFORCE 950 SPORT-4 2024 is a well-designed product. It performs well when compared with vehicles of equivalent performance. All that remains is to give it a little extra punch. 

Strengths

  • Overall finish quality is up. Gone are the days of dodgy plastics, and the result is a beautiful, contemporary look.
  • Suspension performance with gas-charged shock absorbers is flawless. They’re easy to adjust and handle all bumps well. 
  • Standard equipment is more than generous compared to the competition. That’s the brand’s trademark, and they’ve managed to keep it that way.

Areas for improvement

  • The 85 HP engine (”only”) leaves us a little disappointed. An extra 30-40 HP would be interesting. Especially for the four-seater version with all occupants on board. We feel that the chassis could take more without even flinching. 
  • The rear design is too similar to the competition, leaving the impression of a copy.
  • The gear selection lever isn’t always very precise, and there were a few occasions when the “L” or “R” gear wasn’t engaged. To be reviewed/adjusted to avoid premature breakage.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the CFMOTO ZFORCE 950 SPORT-4 2024 offers superior performance to its predecessor. Above all, it takes the overall experience up a notch. Although there are a few areas for improvement, the vehicle as a whole is a lot of fun.

This vehicle is well suited to what most people need for moderate use. That is, on federated trails within speed limits, with comfort and convenience. A vehicle to consider if you’re in the process of buying a side-by-side in this category.
